Note: The catalog portion has been modified to reflect accurate information. The third-party grading service mislabeled this cabinet as coming from the 1888-89 N173 Old Judge designation.
Apparently, 1880s minor leaguer Thomas McCullum is as big a mystery to baseball historians as hitting was to the well-traveled centerfielder. Encapsulated and assessed “Authentic” by SGC, this 1888-1889 Thomas McCullum cabinet photo was produced by Arthur B. Rugg photography studio of Minneapolis, MN. McCullum is pictured during his tenure with the Western Association’s Minneapolis Millers, whose uniform he is wearing in this sepia-toned depiction. For his documented career, the mustachioed player batted .033 (3-for-33), though is not listed in any historical source as having played for Minneapolis, which was also the home of the Rugg manufacturer listed on the reverse.
