Though its origin is somewhat unclear, this vintage wrist watch combines two revered baseball institutions! The clock facing features “BOSTON RED SOX” with the exact amount of characters (12) needed to represent hour indicators. Near the center, “Baseball Hall of Fame” appears in small characters. “May 7, 1955” is engraved on the back of the timepiece. The original leather band in intact and the watch is in full working order with separate hour/minute hands and a second dial.
As for the “Hall of Fame” and “Red Sox” indicators, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony wasn’t held until July 25 that year. Additionally, of the six players honored, none had ever played for the Red Sox. The decorations suggest that this was perhaps a souvenir issued in Cooperstown. In any case, it’s a beautiful timepiece and the only example we have encountered.
