With the collapse of the Western Hockey League in 1926, the NHL added three new teams to its “American Division” and ensured that an American-based team would participate in the Finals for Lord Stanley’s coveted cup. Representatives of the American Division (by virtue of playoff triumphs over Pittsburgh and Boston) in only their second season, the New York Rangers bested the Montreal Maroons to become the first-ever American-based NHL team to hoist the Stanley Cup. Among the earliest ice artifacts extant, this hockey stick is autographed by (13) members of that championship Madison Square Garden installment! The full-size stick is decorated with vintage player portrait decals, six of which have been signed by their pioneer subjects. Executed in black-ink steel tip fountain pen, the scriptings maintain varying degrees of strength and clarity and include: Clarence Abel (d.1964) signed “Taffy Abel” (“3-4” strength); Frank Boucher (d.1977; “3” strength); Leo Bourgeault (d.1978; "3" strength); Patsy Callighen (d.1964; "2" strength); Bill Cook (d.1986; “6” quality); Bun Cook (d.1988; “5” potency); Ching Johnson (d.1979; “4-5” strength); Murray Murdoch (d.2001) signed “John Murdoch” (“5” strength); Lester Patrick (player/coach, d.1960) signature faded at beginning and end, though visible characters (and most of the surname) show (“8”) strength; Paul Thompson (d.1991; "2" strength) and (2) unidentified signatures.
