Highest Graded! Graded 55 VG-EX+ 4.5 by SGC. On the heels of the groundbreaking 1908-09 Rose Co. Postcards Walter Johnson offering in our August auction, another "new to hobby" specimen has surfaced in Central Maryland. While the earlier rendition is breathtaking in its own right, the offered 1908-09 Rose Co. Postcards Walter Johnson now has top billing as the finest confirmed example in the hobby! This significant earliest collectible of the Class of 1936 Hall of Fame inductee pictures the fireballer soon after being rebranded The Big Train following his stint as the Weiser Wonder of Idaho.
The 1908-09 Rose Co. designation is undoubtedly one of the most cherished and difficult postcard issues of the era. The black-and-white portrait of the ace is surrounded by an alluring gilt embossed bat-and-ball motif. While the artifact does exhibit incidental corner and edge wear, the image is completely absent of creasing or other obtrusive wear. Beneath the identifying caption is a diamond shaped field setting complete with gold stamped bases, base paths and two players in period garb. The correspondence section on the blank reverse is absent of any writing or evidence of post office handling.
