As players honed their skills and basically prepared for the upcoming season in 1963, a spectacle at a Grapefruit League exhibition between the Yankees and Reds served as an introduction to perhaps the game’s most dedicated and fierce competitor of all time. In that contest, Mickey Mantle launched a tape-measure home run, only to see rookie outfield Pete Rose race back to the wall and leap high off the ground in a futile attempt to snare the long drive. After circling the bases and returning to the Yankee dugout, Mantle asked teammate Whitey Ford: “Did you see Charlie Hustle out there?” Six pennants, three World Series titles and 4,256 hits later, Rose personified the word “hustle.” This baseball is autographed by Rose with an inscription attributing his moniker to the Yankee slugger. The snow-white OML sphere (grade “10”) is signed by Rose in black ballpoint on a side panel (“10” strength) and inscribed “Mickey Mantle Named Me Charlie Hustle.” Comes with a cert/sticker from JSA.
