Significant c. 1917 Chicago Union Giants and Indianapolis ABCs team cabinet featuring a lineup of (23) players from the squads including the unmistakable likeness of Oscar Charleston. The 8x10 black-and-white image is matted to nearly 13-3/4 x 11” dimensions. While Negro League player photo matching is still in its infancy, there is a high probability that other high-profile stars (including Hall of Famers) could also be depicted and ultimately confirmed. The inclusion of Charleston is what sets this piece apart. The 1976 Cooperstown inductee started his career with the ABCs in 1915 and spent several seasons with the organization. The five-tool wonder is regarded as perhaps the finest all-around talent in Negro League history. Such material depicting Negro League squads is nearly impossible to locate in any condition, especially such crystal clear player images featuring two historic franchises in a packed ballpark setting. Although the sturdy black matte displays extensive perimeter notching and tearing along with minimal crazing and chipping to the photograph, the central image is not disturbed. The name “Kelley” is inscribed in pencil on the reverse, lending credence to the notion that this piece originates from the estate of former Union Giants pitcher, Palmer Kelley.
